Warm Weather Brings Winter Mix

Good afternoon everyone!

Temperatures have warmed up considerable and have now broke above freezing. Temperatures will continue to be on the rise through the nice as another system brings us some rain before changing back over to snow by tomorrow morning.  Temperatures are going to remain in the upper 30s throughout most of the week, but the Greenland Block is reforming and Colder air could start to settle into the area in early February! Stay tuned to my weather blog and of course, the Facebook page: Wacky World of Weather for the latest!

Snow Is Over....What's Next?

Good evening. The snow has finally come to an end across the Chicagoland area and most of the snow totals are right in line with the 5-7" predictions.   Some areas have had more, with Joliet topping out at 9.1".  So far, unofficially, O'Hare has 5.4" and Midway has 7.3" Those totals could still go up a little, and O'Hare's could be increased a little as well due to the lake effect. Here in Romeoville, we have seen 6.6" of snow! A complete list of snow totals will be posted later once everything becomes official and no new snow is expected to occur.  Temperatures have actually risen slightly to about 20 degrees and will hold in the mid 20s tomorrow.

The Winter Storm Warning has now been cancelled for all areas.

A warm-up is expected later this weekend and next week. More on that later! Stay tuned for more updates here and on the Facebook page with the same name!

Still a Few More Hours To Go!

The snow is coming down at rates of more than 1" per hour in some places and the snow is really starting to pile up! Midway is reporting at 5.2" and here in Romeoville 4.0" have fell since 5pm at the National Weather Service. There is still at least a few more hours of snow to come, as it is not expected to taper off until around 7-8pm, and exit the area from west to east by 11pm!!! Travel times have tripled and MANY flights have been cancelled at all major airports!!! I advised that you stay indoors, but if you do have to go out, drive safely, and be careful. Go slow! Most roads will not be cleaned due to the heavy snowfall rates and salt ineffectiveness! Stay tuned to my blog and Facebook Weather Page Wacky World of Weather!

Snow is Underway!

Snow is falling in earnest over much of the Chicagoland area!! Snowfall rates of 1" per hour or more have been reported at O'Hare and Midway! Snow will continue to fall and pile up over the course of the next SEVERAL hours.  Most areas are reporting between 2-3" of snow so far, so the 5-7" totals appear to be right on track, with a few areas south and west of the city getting more! Travel is horrendous right now as the salt is not working in these cold temperatures and snow fighting trucks are unable to keep up with this snow because of the rate that it is falling at!!! Stay tuned to my blog and the Wacky World of Weather Facebook page for the latest on the biggest snowfall of the year so far!

Winter Weather Advisory Updated to Winter Storm Warning

New details are continuing to emerge on the upcoming snow storm for tomorrow afternoon.  The Winter Weather Advisory has now been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning! Most areas are going to fall into the 6-9" range with a few areas getting locally 10" totals! Snow will spread into the area by about 10am tomorrow morning and continue falling until 9pm tomorrow night.  The current models indicate that ALMOST every area will get at LEAST 6" out of this system!!!  Even if your county is not in the Advisory or Warning area, it does not mean that you won't get SNOW from this system.  The conditions are prime for maximum moisture.  The snow will be of the light fluffy variety so do not worry about that!!! Much more details tomorrow on my blog and NOW find my blog on Facebook at Wacky World of Weather for the latest up-to-minute status about Chicagoland's Weather!!!

Winter Weather Advisory In Effect

Temperatures have dropped into the single digits and we are starting to get some more information on the current snow storm heading for the area.  Temperatures have dropped to 9 degrees at O'Hare at 7 degrees in Romeoville at the NWS.  Wind chills are in the -2 to -7 range over the areas.  Temperatures will slowly rebound to about 15 degrees tomorrow, but it will bring snow into the area as well.

All counties north of I-80 (Will County and north) are under a Winter Weather Advisory that will begin tomorrow at 9am and expire at Midnight Saturday!!! The forecast calls for 3-6" of snowfalls, but the latest model runs currently indicate a 6-8" range.  There are many factors that will play a wild card in this system.  Stay tuned later more a much more detailed outlook on the storm and an update on the snowfall totals!!

Chicago Area Braces for 2nd Major Storm!

After waking to extremely frigid temperatures this morning, Chicago is bracing for its second major storm of the winter season, and this storm is very likely to surpass the previous storms' 4.9" at O'Hare, which would make this storm the biggest of the season.

First, after a light round of snow early this morning coated the ground in the Chicago area, and left so southern sections with about an 1" of snow, temperatures have dropped to their lowest levels of the season.  It is currently 8 degrees at O'Hare Airport and 11 degrees here in Romeoville at the National Weather Service Office. Temperatures are expected to continue to slightly decrease as the day goes on!! Temperatures will slowly be on the rise throughout the day tomorrow and will top out in the 20s as the next storm system approaches.

Currently, we are under a Winter Storm Watch for tomorrow as 6-10" of snow is expected to blanket the area by Saturday morning.  Travel will be hazardous and snowfall rates of an inch per hour are possible with this system.  More details will be available later! Stay tuned for the latest!!

UPDATED: Chicago Braces For First Snowstorm of the Season

A quick update!

The National Weather Service has changed the Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Weather Advisory! The totals have not changed, but because this storm will be a more prolonged storm, the amount of snow we get, plus the number of hours it will occur over does not fit the criteria for a Winter Storm Watch! However, 4-8" is still expected, with the city expected to be on the higher end of the spectrum.  More details to come later!!!!!

Stay tuned for the latest updates!!

Chicago Braces For First Snowstorm of the Season

We have waited for a long time, but the time has finally come. Chicago is right in line to receive its first major snowstorm of the season beginning tomorrow morning.  So far, this winter has been exceptionally mild, and has logged a paltry 1.9" of snow. All that is about to change as winter arrives tomorrow!

For today however, temperatures currently are 48 degrees and could climb into the 50s with a surplus of sunshine.  It will be a rather pleasant January day before winter takes hold tomorrow.  Temperatures will slowly fall tonight and will be well below freezing by morning, as a winter storm approaches the area.

As for the details of the storm, the National Weather Service has officially issued a WINTER STORM WATCH for the counties of McHenry, Kane, Kendall, Cook, DuPage, Will and other counties in IN until 9am Friday morning. The watch will likely  be upgraded to a warning sometime right before the storm hits late tonight or tomorrow morning.  Snow is expected to spread across the area by around 9am tomorrow morning and continue into the early Friday morning.  Current computer models are suggesting totals will end up in the 6-9" range, but the majority of the area will likely fall in a 5-8" window, with a few isolated spots receiving 10", especially in Indiana where lake-effect snows will enhance snowfall totals. The evening rush hour tomorrow and morning rush hour on Friday will be affected.  Winds are supposed to be in excess of 30mph as well, which will causing blowing snow and will reduce visibility's to under a mile.

Stay tuned to my blog over the course of the next couple of days for the latest on this Winter Storm!!
